Kala Ramnath and Purbayan Chatterjee
Sunday, September 17, 5 pm
Two fresh, blazing stars in the field of North Indian classical music – the spellbinding violinist Kala Ramnath and the exuberant sitar player Purbayan Chatterjee — perform solo with tabla, then draw you deeper into their world in a golden duet.
Special thanks to Shelly Kumar and the India Classical Music Society for their support of this concert.
Culture Musical Club of Zanzibar
Tuesday, September 19, 7:30 pm
The vibrant sound of taarab music — “get you moving” in Swahili — reflects centuries of cultural contact between Indian Ocean traders and East Africa and is forever remembered for its embrace by Zanzibar’s independence movement. This is a rare chance to hear one of Africa’s largest orchestras in the intimate MCA Theater.
Soul N One with Special Guests São Paulo Underground
Wednesday, September 20, 7:30 pm
For this special concert, dynamo percussionist Kahil El’Zabar integrates young French jazz musicians with his formidable Ethnic Heritage Ensemble featuring Joseph Bowie and Ernest Khabeer Dawkins. The double bill tops out with the inventive São Paulo Underground, led by the restlessly inventive cornetist Rob Mazurek and guitarist Mauricio Takara.
