No Lights! No Camera! Action!
Tue, Nov 5, 2013, 6–8 pm
Artist and curator Steve Cossman, from famed Brooklyn cinema arts organization Mono No Aware, comes to the MCA to present an interactive workshop on different ways to make animated films without the use of a camera.
Come out to Tuesday Evenings at the MCA and learn how to directly manipulate the surface of 16mm film. A variety of direct filmmaking techniques, including painting, scratching, collage, and masking, are demonstrated to create short experimental film loops. The activity is designed to share the basics of how to articulate movement and create compositions through direct mark-making on the medium of film. Each participant has the opportunity to make a short film that is projected during the evening’s screening party.
Steve Cossman is founder and director of Mono No Aware, a New York-based cinema arts organization that offers a series of analog film-making workshops. Cossman is also a curator and visual artist creating time-based works on film, video, and paper. His recent work on film, TUSSLEMUSCLE, earned Kodak’s Continued Excellence in Filmmaking award, and his newest work, WHITE CABBAGE, premieres in December.
