Manual Cinema, Mementos Mori
Tue, Aug 19, 2014
The adventurous team of performers, composers, and visual artists perform a work-in-progress showing of their cinematic shadow puppet creation, an intimate account of three transformative stories that trace our changing relationship to death and dying. The work was commissioned by the MCA and premieres at MCA Stage in January 2015.
Mementos Mori depicts three interrelated stories of a five-year-old child, an ailing former television host, and a video game designer. Using overhead projectors, paper puppets, actors in silhouette, video, and a live chamber ensemble, the performance addresses how digital culture is changing our relationship to death and dying. Manual Cinema received commissioning support and a developmental residency at MCA Stage, and performs the world premiere at MCA Stage as part of the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival.
