Gallery Talk: Confronting the Canvas: Gesture, Performance, and Gender

Art historian David Getsy and performance artist Lin Hixson discuss the ways in which artists in Destroy the Picture: Painting the Void, 1949–1962 responded to their confrontation with the blank space of the canvas. Focusing on material gesture and bodily engagement, they examine how gender factored into their destructive acts of creation.
David Getsy is the Goldabelle McComb Finn Distinguished Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His research focuses on modern and contemporary art in Europe and America, with an emphasis on histories of sculpture and performance. His books include the recent Scott Burton: Collected Writings on Art and Performance, 1965-1975 (2012) and Rodin: Sex and the Making of Modern Sculpture (2010). He has also written essays on such artists as Nancy Grossman, Ernesto Pujol, Pablo Picasso, Henry Moore, Albert Giacometti, and John Chamberlain. He was educated at Oberlin College (B.A.) and Northwestern University (Ph.D.) and has received fellowships from the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, the Clark Art Institute, the Getty Foundation, Dartmouth College, and the Kress Foundation. He is on the editorial board of the Art Bulletin.
Lin Hixson is co-founder and director of Every house has a door, and was the director of the performance group Goat Island. She is Full Professor of Performance at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and received an honorary doctorate from Dartington College of Arts, University of Plymouth, in 2007. She was awarded the United States Artists Ziporyn Fellowship in 2009. Her writing on directing, choreography, and performance has been published in the journals Poetry, The Drama Review, Frakcija, Performance Research, and Women and Performance; and included in the anthologies Small Acts of Repair – Performance, Ecology, and Goat Island; Live – Art and Performance; and Perform, Repeat, Record: Live Art in History.
