Elevating the Everyday: Teaching as Performance
Sat, Jan 29, 2011
The current MCA exhibition, Without You I’m Nothing: Art and Its Audience, highlights the work of artists who engage the presence of the audience in the conception, production, and presentation of their work. This workshop further emphasizes the importance of the physical relationship of the viewer to the experience of contemporary art by challenging teachers to create direction-based performances that engage others in the museum. Actions derived from teaching practice as well as the everyday serve to inform these acts which call attention to the role of the teacher as performer. Led by inter-disciplinary artist Maria Gaspar, teachers are introduced to performance exercises that have wide-ranging applications to the classroom.
