Director’s Tour: Think First, Shoot Later
Tue, Sep 3, 2013, 12–1 pm
Heidi Reitmaier, Beatrice C. Mayer Director of Education, leads a tour of Think First, Shoot Later: Photography from the MCA Collection.
About the Exhibition
Think First, Shoot Later: Photography from the MCA Collection examines many of the defining artists and themes in conceptual photography over the past four decades. Like much of the photography produced after the 1960s, these works are highly premeditated, systematic, and staged: in other words, embodying an ethos of “think first, shoot later.” Featuring work by Thomas Ruff, Andreas Gursky, Jeff Wall, Rodney Graham, Lorna Simpson, Ana Mendieta, James Welling, and Wolfgang Tillmans, among many others, this exhibition not only offers a glimpse at the broad holdings of the MCA Collection but also gives audiences a sense of some of the most dominant issues defining the field of photography today. This exhibition is organized by Michael Darling, James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, with assistance from Kristin Korolowicz, 2012–13 Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow, at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
