General MCA Volunteers
General volunteers assist museum staff and help carry out the mission of the MCA by interacting with visitors and serving as welcoming representatives of the museum. Opportunities to greet visitors at First Fridays, usher at education lectures, or accept membership cards at members’ openings come up on a regular basis. Other opportunities, such as off-site volunteering or short-term office assistance, come up intermittently as well. Each month enrolled volunteers receive an e-mail with the upcoming month’s opportunities. Volunteers sign up for those dates that fit their schedules, and the spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
General volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment, in which they fulfill at least 12 hours, and are strongly encouraged to become members of the MCA. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. We will keep your application on file. Selected candidates will be interviewed, and upon selection to the program, will be asked to participate in a volunteer orientation session.
Candidates under the age of 18 must present a parent’s or guardian’s written permission before volunteering. Candidates must be at least 21 years of age to volunteer at First Fridays.

Family Program Volunteers
In January of 2009, a new program began for volunteers specifically interested in interacting with families and children and learning about projects which successfully engage families with young children in a contemporary art museum setting. Events such as Family Days, Summer Studios, and other events are available to Family Program volunteers on a regular basis. Volunteers welcome and direct families upon their arrival to the museum, assist staff and teaching artists at creation stations, and may be asked to represent the MCA at off-site events. Individuals interested in interacting with families as well as students currently enrolled in art education and early childhood education programs are encouraged to apply.
Family Program volunteers are a core group of volunteers who participate in a training session and fulfill 15 volunteer hours per year. Family Program volunteers are asked to make a one-year commitment and are strongly encouraged to become members of the MCA. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, and interviews are scheduled when a position becomes available. Please indicate your interest in Family Programs on the application form.
All Family Program volunteers complete a background check before starting their hours. Candidates under the age of 18 must present a parent’s or guardian’s written permission before volunteering.

If you love learning about contemporary art and would like to share that knowledge with others, consider becoming a docent at the MCA. Docents give public tours of the exhibitions to adult visitors and receive ongoing training from educators, curators, and artists. Docents commit to one or two days of touring per month (one or two tours per day), attendance at ongoing training sessions, and a minimum of two years of touring after the initial training. We are currently accepting names for our waiting list. For more information, please call Susan Musich at 312.397.3899.
