Teen Creative Agency (TCA) Lead Artist
The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago seeks a Lead Artist to develop and facilitate the museum’s teen program, Teen Creative Agency (TCA), on an independent contractor basis. TCA partners with local youth (TCA members) who are interested in becoming active civic leaders and interpreters of contemporary culture. The program prompts teens to consider diverse ways to engage museum audiences through participatory experiences as well as social practice all rooted in contemporary critical thinking and cultural practice.
Two Lead Artists work in partnership to conceptualize and guide the program, leading all weekly Saturday sessions with an ambition to build a deep local community, encourage relationships within the museum and beyond, as well as provide a national and international context for the TCA program and its work. They will work closely with the Manager of Family and Youth Programs on recruitment, participant selection, outreach, program development, and the execution of all aspects of the program.
Bachelor’s degree required. The position requires professionalism, dependability, flexibility and excellent people skills, including effective verbal communication. Candidates must be active creative practitioners – visual artists, designers, writers, performance artists or otherwise. They will have demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art and visual culture, contemporary theory and museum practice, with ideally some experience working within an institution. They must have experience working with youth, possess a solid understanding of youth development, and be highly effective in addressing diverse learning contexts. Candidates will have the ability to conceptualize the program as well as nurture the members of TCA. They must be proficient communicators with a strong passion and ability to generate ideas, manage projects, anticipate outcomes, and coordinate and deliver to deadlines. Ability to see works of visual art and hear and respond verbally to the voices of other people required. Full mobility throughout the building, some lifting and set up of hospitality and studio supplies required.
Work schedule is approximately 18 hours per week. The Lead Artist must be available to lead weekly Saturday TCA sessions, September to June, 12pm to 5pm. Additional hours during the week are required for planning, research, and evaluation.
